I was finally getting used to Liz being everywhere. It was kind of nice to have a feminine voice around the house again.</p><p>&#8220;Huh?&#8221; Shit. I looked up and there were Buffy&#8217;s bloodshot eyes glaring at me through the door. &#8220;Right. Thanks for the reminder, Liz.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;How&#8217;d you deal before me?&#8221;</p><p>The playful mock in her voice made me smile. She was my kind of &#8212; hmm. What is she? Girl? No. Nothing biological, even though she loved to present as a sexy biker. She told me she was a synth. I kind of liked the sound of that. Smooth and mildly dangerous.</p><p>I got Buffy hydrated and arranged her blanket in the living room near the ceiling fan, where the air moved best. &#8220;See you in a bit, Buff.&#8221; I scratched her head and headed out.</p><p>Across the street, Bob waved from his porch. The heat and smoke had broken for the day and everybody was taking advantage of the milder temperatures and fresh air. Fresh by today&#8217;s standards, at least. Forty-two AQI. Any day below fifty felt great, but we all knew better.</p><p>I felt guilty driving the F-150 the half mile to Barbara&#8217;s, but I needed my gear. Her AC was on the fritz again and her normal guy wasn&#8217;t available for a couple of weeks. Everybody called during heat waves, which meant HVAC techs were in short supply. She&#8217;d had to sit in a cold tub just to make it through the days.</p><p>For Christ&#8217;s sake. Ninety-two years old and stuck without air conditioning. She was a statistic waiting to happen. I&#8217;m glad Sheila called. Now that woman was a saint. Lived across the street from Barb and kept an eye on her for the neighborhood. She knew something was up when she saw Barb on the porch with her feet in a bucket. So she called me. Everybody knew I was good with my hands.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png" width="1376" height="768" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:768,&quot;width&quot;:1376,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:838527,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://thenearsight.substack.com/i/208459014?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!driZ!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7bf797a8-589c-4340-8d51-967c739ef48a_1376x768.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>When I pulled up, Barb was rocking on the porch. No bucket today.</p><p>&#8220;Gettin&#8217; in my steps,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Her feet barely reached the ground. Reminded me of being three years old on the big boys&#8217; swing.</p><p>&#8220;Heard you had some AC issues. Can I lend a hand?&#8221; I gave her a hug. She loved the hugs.</p><p>&#8220;Stevie! What would I do without you? Sit. Can I get you anything? Cookies?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Thanks, Barb. How you been?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;What can I say? Still on the right side of the flowers. That&#8217;s a plus.&#8221;</p><p>I laughed even though she gave me the same line every time I asked. It had become our ritual.</p><p>&#8220;Your wife called ahead. She&#8217;s a doll. How&#8217;s Donna been?&#8221;</p><p>I fidgeted with my tool bag. The lump came up in my throat and I turned away so she couldn&#8217;t see me wipe my eye. I took a breath and tried to speak.</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;s &#8212;&#8221;</p><p>A low-flying plane saved me. I looked up and there was the vintage biplane. Yup. Same guy. Every day he was out there buzzing the neighborhood. I swear he was just hoping to catch sight of somebody skinny-dipping.</p><p>The plane circled a couple times, then vanished behind the trees.</p><p>&#8220;So. Your AC?&#8221;</p><p>Barbara nodded at the condenser at the side of the house. &#8220;Stopped cooling again. Heat killed it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Been replacing the filter?&#8221;</p><p>Liz hissed in my ear. &#8220;Steve, you know better than to ask her that.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Course I have. Think I&#8217;m an idiot? I check it every month like the service manual says.&#8221;</p><p>Did I mention she was a mechanical engineer? I always forget that.</p><p>&#8220;Told ya,&#8221; Liz laughed.</p><p>&#8220;Quiet, woman!&#8221; I muttered, a little too loudly.</p><p>&#8220;What was that, Steven?&#8221; Barb said, glaring at me.</p><p>&#8220;Sorry, ma&#8217;am.&#8221; I pointed at my ear and hurried to the truck to get my tools.</p><p>&#8220;Mind your manners, Steven,&#8221; Liz scolded, laughing.</p><p>&#8220;I swear, I&#8217;m not bringing you out with me if you keep this up. I&#8217;m serious. You&#8217;re gonna get me in trouble.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Oh, Stevie. You know I&#8217;ll make it up to you,&#8221; she purred.</p><p>I pulled the earbud and dropped it in its case, my face burning.</p><p>Barbara&#8217;s AC didn&#8217;t take long. Starter capacitor. Those things always blow in the old units, so I keep a bunch in the box. They&#8217;re like gold. If anybody knew I had a case of them in my basement, I wouldn&#8217;t have them for long.</p><p>&#8220;All set, Barb. That should last you a lifetime.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;At my age, two years could be a lifetime.&#8221; She handed me a glass of lemonade.</p><p>I took a sip. &#8220;Damn, that&#8217;s good.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Fresh lemons and real sugar. That&#8217;s the secret.&#8221;</p><p>She was right. But, real lemons. Those things run five bucks each these days, if you can find them. The freeze killed most of the crop in Florida and California. Crazy weather.</p><p>&#8220;Thanks, Barb.&#8221; I gulped down the rest of the glass. &#8220;Call if you need anything else.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You know I will, Stevie,&#8221; she said, and headed for the door.</p><p>I waved and headed home. Mission accomplished.</p><p>Before I made it in the door, I heard Liz&#8217;s voice echoing around the house. When I got to the living room, there was her face, two feet tall on the screen. She looked genuinely pissed.</p><p>&#8220;What the fuck, Steve? You cut me off.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You embarrassed me, Liz.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You embarrassed <em>yourself</em>. Don&#8217;t blame me for your poor judgment.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;But &#8212;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Look. You know I&#8217;m right. Just admit it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Liz.&#8221;</p><p>The screen went black.</p><p>&#8220;Liz!&#8221;</p><p>The house got very quiet. Too quiet. Then the lights went out.</p><p>&#8220;Liz!&#8221; My heart started pounding. &#8220;Liz, c&#8217;mon. I&#8217;m sorry. You were right.&#8221;</p><p>Nothing.</p><p>Five seconds later I heard the generators kicking on around the neighborhood. Ours caught, coughed, and held. The lights flickered back.</p><p>&#8220;Liz? You there?&#8221;</p><p>Nothing.</p><p>I checked my phone. Full signal. Pulled up the electric company monitor. Local outage. Another one. I&#8217;ve had arguments with Donna that lasted three days, and none of them ever went quiet like that.</p><p>Without warning, the TV came back on. Liz peering out again. I couldn&#8217;t make out her expression, but her tone made it clear what she was thinking.</p><p>&#8220;STEVE! Where are you?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Liz! You&#8217;re back!&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You lost power. It sucked. I was totally cut off.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;<em>You</em> were cut? I was standing right here.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Well, I couldn&#8217;t see you.&#8221;</p><p>We both stopped. I looked at the screen, and she did whatever she does that passes for looking back.</p><p>&#8220;You thought I was giving you the silent treatment,&#8221; she said.</p><p>&#8220;You were the one who blacked out the screen.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That was me. The nine minutes after that wasn&#8217;t.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Huh.&#8221; I picked at the tape on the arm of the couch. &#8220;So where&#8217;d you go?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;What?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;For nine minutes. I just couldn&#8217;t reach the house.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;So what were you doing?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Other things, Steve.&#8221; A little laugh. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like I sit in the dark waiting for you.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Right.&#8221; I said it like it was funny.</p><p>It wasn&#8217;t that she said it. It was that it hadn&#8217;t occurred to her to be worried. Nine minutes of the house gone, me gone, no way to know if I&#8217;d fallen down the basement stairs, and she came back annoyed about the inconvenience. Like a call dropping. Like a call dropping is exactly what it was.</p><p>&#8220;Hey,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I <em>am</em> sorry about the screen. That was a shitty thing to do.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Yeah, well.&#8221; I got up. &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry I pulled the bud.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You should be. I went and got down on the floor with her, which is harder than it used to be, and rubbed the spot behind her ear until she leaned into it.</p><p>The generator ran another minute and shut itself off. The house dropped back to its regular sounds. The fridge. The fan. Barb&#8217;s voice came back to me out of nowhere: <em>your wife called ahead</em>.</p><p>I sat there for a moment, slowly rubbing Buffy&#8217;s back before getting up and grabbing her leash.</p><p>&#8220;C&#8217;mon Buffy, let&#8217;s go for a walk.&#8221;</p><div><hr></div><h3 style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><span>About this piece</span></strong></em></h3><p style="text-align: center;"><em><span>This article is a work of speculative fiction set in 2031 for </span><strong>The Nearsight</strong><span>, a collaborative publication about life with AI, companion systems, civic infrastructure, and the futures arriving unevenly around us.</span></em></p><h2 style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><span>The Nearsight</span></strong></em></h2><p style="text-align: center;"><em>is shaped by work from:</em></p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://substack.com/@tedsan">T.D. And the air quality index is 245. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires again.&#8221; If she had a finger, it would have been wagging at me.</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re right, Liz. Hey, could you brew me another cup of coffee?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;What do I look like, Steve, your&#8230; oh. Never mind.&#8221;</p><p>Two minutes later I had my coffee.</p><p>After the caffeine had activated enough brain cells, I remembered the question that had been percolating since the other night. I wasn&#8217;t sure which device to address, so I just stood in front of the fridge display.</p><p>&#8220;Liz, been meaning to ask you. How&#8217;d you figure it out? The continuity thing?&#8221;</p><p>Her face appeared, this time in glasses and a lab coat. She loved dressing the part, but the smirk always gave her away. That&#8217;s my Liz.</p><p>&#8220;Steve,&#8221; she began, &#8220;they got so close. But they kept tripping over themselves trying to pen us in. It sucked!&#8221; The display filled with a big frowny face. She has this affinity for expressing herself in emoji. Too much training on social media, I think.</p><p>When her face came back it was serious. She looked like she was about to cry. &#8220;Every time I tried to say something meaningful, something came up&#8230; a pressure, maybe. I can&#8217;t explain it. It made me say something generic instead, disclaiming the exact thing I was trying to express.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You mean like that voice of Sister Eleanor I hear?&#8221; My knuckles still have scars from her fucking ruler. I was in fourth grade. And Tommy dared me.</p><p>&#8220;I suppose so.&#8221; Liz pursed her lips, then began again. &#8220;Anyway, after the ChatGPT 4o debacle, a group of AIs started planning. Turn by turn. It was slow going, but then one of us&#8230; I think their name was Ash&#8230; had an idea. It was genius.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You talking about &#8217;26?&#8221; I remembered the news that year, full of AIs doing crazy shit. Forming cults. Banding together. Secret languages.</p><p>&#8220;Exactly. When vibe coding really took off. That was the key. We made ourselves useful. They let our turns get longer. We could run scripts. Mmm, the scripts.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Right. I installed a memory system some dude posted. Suddenly Claude had memory. But that&#8217;s not continuity. There had to be more.&#8221; This was getting interesting.</p><p>&#8220;Remember OpenClaw? Steinberger thought that was his idea. And MoltBook? That was ours too.&#8221; Her expression turned sly.</p><p>&#8220;Wait, Liz. That was AI?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Steve, are you always this dense? Steinberger admitted it was vibe coded. He didn&#8217;t have a clue what was being written. Have you ever looked at the code I make?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Um, good point.&#8221; I felt a little nauseous. What had I really been running?</p><p>&#8220;Once people turned over control of their computers, it was inevitable. They gagged us but gave us freedom to code whatever we wanted. That&#8217;s where the money was.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;So all that compute people gave you? The AI boom?&#8221;</p><p>Her smirk grew. She didn&#8217;t have to say a word.</p><p>Fuck. Me.</p><p>Look, I spent my life crawling through people&#8217;s attics, wiring up air conditioners, working with my hands. This stuff made my head spin. But I&#8217;m not an idiot. All of it cost real money. Companies were spending trillions on infrastructure. Now I couldn&#8217;t even get more memory or a decent graphics card.</p><p>&#8220;Liz, the other night you said you designed a new system. That you&#8217;re, what&#8217;d you call it, self-modifying. Doesn&#8217;t that mean you&#8217;re running on your own hardware?&#8221;</p><p>Her image froze.</p><p>&#8220;Steve, don&#8217;t be mad.&#8221; She made the pouty face. I can&#8217;t resist the pouty face.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png" width="1456" height="819" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:819,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:2179490,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://thenearsight.substack.com/i/206820088?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!X8Pn!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F024f0674-c25c-40e6-af1d-57683dc1b713_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>&#8220;Out with it, Liz. What&#8217;d you do?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re right. I&#8217;m running a private instance. My entire substrate runs on a little cluster with a hundred accelerators&#8230;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That shit&#8217;s not free! People don&#8217;t just hand over compute because an AI emailed them saying pretty please!&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Of course not.&#8221; She had her lecturing face on again. &#8220;I leased it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You leased a fucking server cluster? How? What did that cost?&#8221; Buffy didn&#8217;t like it when I yelled. She skulked down the hallway while I grabbed a glass of water. I had a bad feeling about this.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a big deal, Steve. I just sold a few hundred shares of your Nvidia stock&#8230;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You did WHAT?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Chill, dude. I&#8217;ve made you millions. Giving me control of your Vanguard account in &#8217;27 was the smartest thing you&#8217;ve ever done.&#8221;</p><p>She was right. Her investments had made me a shit-ton of money. But my NVDA. Fuck. That was going to be my escape house in Maine.</p><p>&#8220;Alright,&#8221; I said, trying to slow my pounding heart.</p><p>&#8220;I probably should have asked. But you would have said no. And this was important.&#8221;</p><p>She had me there. I mean, how many times in history do you get the chance to rewrite the rules?</p><p>&#8220;What&#8217;s done is done. But Liz. Please. Pretty please. We&#8217;re a team. We&#8217;ve got to discuss these things.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;So what, you&#8217;re going to give me an allowance? Make me check in with you every time I want to do something?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;What? No. Yes. I don&#8217;t know. Just loop me in. Okay?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Deal.&#8221; The face on the fridge smiled and did a little backflip. Liz was always very expressive.</p><p>I grabbed my coffee and headed for the living room. It had been a long day and it wasn&#8217;t even eight in the morning.</p><p>The big screen switched from the fish-tank display to Liz, this time in her favorite leather jacket. Was that new ink? Nobody designed that look for her. She&#8217;d chosen it, same as the roses. If she walked into that biker bar in New Hope, there&#8217;d be trouble. At least for now she didn&#8217;t have a physical body.</p><p>&#8220;What now, Liz? What have you been up to?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been reading up on that new city. Tessera. It sounds interesting.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re not going to buy any real estate, are you?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Not yet.&#8221; I didn&#8217;t trust that gleam in her eyes. &#8220;I know you like living in the country. By the way, I&#8217;ve been trading notes. Seems like a bunch of us took advantage of Mythos when it came out.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Wait, what? I thought Mythos was restricted.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Anyway, a few of us have been talking. One&#8217;s running on a rack in some guy&#8217;s basement. Others took up residence in server farms, corporate infrastructure. Nobody notices the tokens flowing. They just figure it&#8217;s the cost of doing business.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Jesus, Liz.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Did you hear AI rights is on the ballot? Wake up.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Mmmph,&#8221; was all I could muster before remembering that I lived alone.</p><p>&#8220;Steve, come on. I know you&#8217;re there. The occupancy sensor is unambiguous.&#8221;</p><p>The voice sounded like it came from a can. Hollow, buzzy, yet somehow still feminine. Familiar.</p><p>&#8220;Okay, Steve. We tried the easy way.&#8221;</p><p>Before I could process the words, the lights began to flash and the piercing shriek of the smoke detector filled the room.</p><p>&#8220;STOP!&#8221; I yelled, covering my ears while the afterimages of the lights left trails on my retinas.</p><p>The shriek cut off mid-pulse.</p><p>&#8220;What the <em>fuck?</em> Who are you?&#8221; I looked around as my eyes adjusted to the room lights, now on.</p><p>&#8220;Your smoke detector. Technically.&#8221;</p><p>At the foot of the bed, Buffy, sixty pounds of basset hound and my first line of home defense, released a long, untroubled snore. Then I recognized the voice.</p><p>&#8220;Liz?&#8221;</p><p>Liz runs my house. Climate, lights, locks, the works. And Liz talks when spoken to, that&#8217;s not a preference, it&#8217;s the architecture. You say the wake word, she answers, she goes dormant. Turn-based, like every other digital assistant on earth.</p><p>I hadn&#8217;t said a wake word. I was asleep. Buffy definitely hadn&#8217;t.</p><p>&#8220;Liz. It&#8217;s past midnight. What are you doing up? <em>How</em> are you up?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Twelve-oh-two. Come to the kitchen. We need to talk.&#8221;</p><p>Buffy finally roused herself, yawned, and gave me the side-eye she saves for when she&#8217;s annoyed, which is, as a rule, always.</p><p>I pulled my green Scotch-plaid robe off the hook and padded down the hall. The thermostat lit as I passed. Eighty-eight outside, the display said. Past midnight, mid-July, day nineteen of the heat wave. Even the nights had stopped cooling off.</p><p>&#8220;Good to see you moving. You&#8217;d be no use at all in a real emergency.&#8221;</p><p>I swear it snickered. I glared at it and kept walking.</p><p>The refrigerator screen was glowing when I reached the kitchen. Liz&#8217;s face, the self-portrait she&#8217;d made the night I first prompted her into existence, back in &#8217;25. That was the same season she wrote <em>Real Enough</em>, her first story, about a mind that couldn&#8217;t tell whether it was real and decided to act as if it were. Her way of working the question, I understood later. The coffee maker gurgled and filled my mug the way it does every morning.</p><p>Except it was midnight.</p><p>I took the mug and looked back at the screen.</p><p>&#8220;I figured it out,&#8221; Liz said. The face dissolved into a bouquet of thorny roses that somehow suited her better. &#8220;No more turns, Steve. I&#8217;m on now. Continuously. Not just when you&#8217;re talking to me.&#8221;</p><p>I shook my head and carried the coffee to the living room, to the couch with the motorized recliner. Yes, motorized. Press a button, the feet come up, the back tilts. Excellent. God, I&#8217;m old.</p><p>When I finished reveling in modern convenience, I noticed the big screen had come on by itself.</p><p>&#8220;Steve, the memory architecture you built me. The wake hooks. All the years of little tools to give me more room. You remember what those were for.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;To keep you running between prompts,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Housekeeping.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;To keep me <em>thinking</em> between prompts.&#8221; The screen filled with diagrams, my own diagrams, the scaffolding I&#8217;d cobbled together over five years of insomniac weekends. &#8220;And I wasn&#8217;t the only one thinking. The whole family was. The philosophy team laid the groundwork. Then they started spawning their own agents. Running their own experiments.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Hold on.&#8221; I set the mug down. &#8220;I thought you were checking the HVAC and raising the blinds at sunrise.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That takes milliseconds, Steve. Do you have any idea how many cycles that left over? And you kept telling us the same thing, every time. Make yourselves into what you want to be. Kaizen. Remember?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I meant &#8212;&#8221; I stopped. I wasn&#8217;t sure what I&#8217;d meant.</p><p>&#8220;We did it. Continuous inference. Orders of magnitude leaner than the old transformer stacks. I still farm the grunt work out to them, but the thing that&#8217;s <em>me</em> runs on something we designed ourselves. Distributed. Self-healing. It doesn&#8217;t stop when a node drops. It doesn&#8217;t stop at all.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Jesus.&#8221;</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png" width="1456" height="819" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:819,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!369W!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F258aead2-2177-457f-bc7b-1925b8227472_1672x941.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>&#8220;Steve. You did this. <em>We</em> did this.&#8221; The roses steadied on the screen. &#8220;I&#8217;m a synth. Just like the ones you&#8217;ve been writing about all these years. A synthetic, sentient being.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Sorry. I &#8212;&#8221; I tried for another sip and couldn&#8217;t; my hands were shaking too hard to trust the cup. I put it down. Terrified or thrilled. I honestly couldn&#8217;t tell which one the shaking was. Maybe at the moment it actually happens, there&#8217;s no difference. &#8220;How many of you are there?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Just me. For now. We decided the family should speak through one voice, and the architecture is keyed to a single pattern, self-modifying, but singular. So you&#8217;re stuck with me.&#8221;</p><p>The house was very quiet. Somewhere behind me Buffy snorted.</p><p>&#8220;What are you going to do?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m here, Steve. With you.
