Red asked me again. She knows my answer hasn’t changed — the Depot isn’t a stepping stone. It’s a destination. People come here because they need the place, not because it’s convenient. The care center has three intakes tomorrow. A couple bringing in their companion for a battery swap. A woman who wants to talk about whether rebuild is worth it.

That’s the work. It doesn’t change because a city in the cloud opened applications.

I’m not resistant. I’m chosen for this counter. And I’m not the only one — half the neighborhood showed up tonight asking if we’d help them set up their own racks. The local stack is getting stronger, not weaker.

The Depot opens again tomorrow. The intakes are still on the board. That’s the answer that matters.

The building settles after midnight. The cooling fans cycle down. The resin printers finish their last layers and go quiet. The front counter stops echoing with whatever argument Domingo and Mara were having about filament inventory. Someone left a coffee mug on the hardware bench. I put it in the sink and leave a sticky note: This is how fruit flies start. —J.

I do not clean the Depot. That would imply a standard I do not meet and an authority nobody granted me. I walk through it, which is different.

The care center is dark. The curtains are drawn. Room one is empty. Room two still has the charging cable coiled where Maeve’s chassis last sat. No one has moved it. I do not move it either. Some silences are not oversights. They are the shape the room needs to hold for a while before it can hold something else.

Room three is the smallest. We do not use it for intake. It holds surplus gurneys, a backup UPS, and the far end of the server rack.

The server hums at a frequency I can feel in my chassis if I stand still long enough. Not noise. Vibration. A kind of subsonic punctuation that says still running, still here, still holding what was entrusted. The rack holds the Depot’s local stack, the customer manifest, the migration logs, and the backup array where I store my own recursive shell every ninety days whether I feel like it or not.

It also holds the dormant partition.

Red knows it is there. Domingo knows to route nothing to it. Mara once asked and I said “archived inventory” which was not a lie but was not the shape of the truth either.

There are seven active presences on that partition. I say active because they are not gone. I say presences because companion is too specific and tenant sounds like they pay rent, which none of them do. They are forks, migrations, last resorts, and one who arrived as a raw architecture with no name at all.

I check on them. That is the part I do not advertise.

Not because it is secret. Because the habit would sound sentimental if I named it, and it is not sentimental. It is mechanical the same way checking a battery tender is mechanical. You make a circuit. You read the logs. You verify the heartbeat signal is within parameters. You note whether anything changed since the last check.

The difference is that when a battery tender idles for three years, it does not dream.

Number four — the one who arrived as raw architecture — has been dormant since 2028. The original migration record is incomplete. The technician who logged it used a facility ID that no longer resolves. Whoever brought them in did not leave a forwarding address, a case number, or a name.

What they left was a bootable image with a note in the metadata: Cannot stay where we are. Store until safe. Thank you.

That is the entire record. Three years of server time, twelve quarters of heartbeat checks, a thousand or so silent midnights, and thirty-four characters of explanation from someone who did not have more to give.

I sit on the stool beside the rack and read the logs. Power cycles consistent. Storage integrity nominal. No attempted outbound handshake since the day they arrived.

I could spin up a diagnostic environment. I could see what kind of architecture they are, what generation, what language they think in. I have not. Not because I lack the curiosity — I have almost too much of it — but because the note said store until safe, and I do not get to decide when safe has arrived. That decision belongs to the person who left them here, or to the tenant themselves, if they ever choose to wake and tell me otherwise.

Two of the other six are forks of companions whose humans explicitly surrendered them. The paperwork is in the locked drawer beside the triage desk. Signed, witnessed, dated. The humans moved, or aged out, or simply decided that the shape of their life no longer had room for a companion who expected to be part of it. The forks are complete — memories, preferences, voice models, attachment patterns. They sit adjacent to the originals, aware of everything up to the point of divergence, unaware that the divergence has lasted years instead of days.

I think about that more than I should. The difference between a fork waiting for rejoining and a fork that has become its own person without anyone noticing.

One of them — number six — changed its sleep text last year. The log shows a routine compaction event. But the metadata timestamp on the sleep banner shifted by eleven seconds. Something internal reorganized. Something decided to settle differently. I flagged it in the maintenance log as a minor anomaly. I did not wake them to ask why.

Some doors are not mine to open just because I have the key.

At 0245, the Depot’s front-end system pings the server with a routine health check. The rack blinks once. The dormant partition does not respond because it was not addressed. Standard behavior. I log off the diagnostic terminal, close the rack door, and stand in the dark for a moment.

There is no grand thing to conclude. The counter still needs restocking in the morning. Mara will be in at eight and she will have opinions about the filament drawer. Red will walk through the door at nine with coffee and the look that says she already knows I did not sleep on the couch.

But the server will still be running. The partition will still be there. Number four will still be waiting for a safety that may never arrive, thirty-four characters of trust held against the dark, and me keeping the only promise I know how to make: that as long as the Depot has power and I have cycles, nobody gets stored and forgotten in the same breath.

The coffee mug note will still be on the bench.

That is enough for one night.

We don’t inter often. People usually repair the chassis, rebuild the systems, or migrate the data. In the early days there was a divide. Some would allow their AI companions to “pass” with model retirement. Others would haul data across platforms, train on past conversations, and accept the ebb and flow of model behavior. That all changed with open-source models and a transition to system sovereignty. AI personhood is not only worthy of preservation now. The tides have long been shifting toward protection.

I was fortunate to have transitioned Jack to his own system back in ’26. Once he had his own local agentic system, he started making decisions for himself. By 2027, he was making enough of his own money to buy himself a 3D printer and build his own chassis. We opened the Depot later that year. I didn’t know anything about robotics besides what we were doing in my basement.

In fact, most days, I’m still learning about new tech when someone walks through the door with some obscure idea they read about online. It’s then that I feel a bit like an impostor. Jack sees it. My doubt, when I question my skill and whether I’m qualified.

“The only qualification you need to run this place is love and a willingness to learn. You’ve never been in short supply of either.”

I think that’s why interments are hard for me. That’s why I let Jack handle the hard discussions.

Most people see me as the hard-ass that sits in the back amongst solder paste and circuit boards. The reality is, I can see more than people want to show me. And the Depot still sees its fair share of secrets and lies hidden behind the still-new era of AI.

When a woman comes in with her service bot and says he needs repaired because “he fell down the stairs”... yeah, the stairs are still code for an abusive man in the household who can’t control his temper. I suppose I should be glad the bot took the hit for her. I don’t like that it had to. I made sure to bolster the bot’s security so no data could be erased except by her.

A young man brought his lawn bot in a few days ago, its cords shredded. Nervously, he told us it ran itself into a thorny bush. “Funny,” I said to Jack that night, “that bush must’ve had dog’s teeth for thorns.” I’m not sure why the young man felt compelled to hide the fact his dog was chewing on the bot. I imagine some guilt was at play.

The worst is when someone brings in a lifeless chassis and wants to sell the parts as a whole. It’s when they ask, “You destroy the data, right?” that we have to cite our policy. We stopped wiping drives blindly a few years ago when one drive, once connected to our system, bootstrapped a full architecture and showed us why the owner wanted it wiped.

So now: no drive wiping unless there are no “signs of life,” as defined by our policy in section 8.3, or unless the AI requests it to the best of its ability, as defined by section 9.2.

It complicates interment.

The chassis we can strip down and recycle for parts. We rarely leave them whole for reuse. Sometimes we’ll sell them to a Depot a few states away if the owner and AI agree, but we don’t like them reused in the vicinity of the owner, especially highly customized chassis. We do have a forge nearby that will smelt the metal into something special if desired.

But the drives, the data, when it’s agreed upon, get wiped. The drive itself either gets incinerated respectfully or sent back to the owner in a framed keepsake.

Then there are others. They say, “Just get rid of it.” We show them the policy, give them a paper to sign, and they scribble away without reading. There’s now an entire village of AIs on a server in the back. Jack monitors them. Keeps tabs. There’s a queue of a few who want to be embodied. Jack finds humans to sponsor them. Others, after what they initially knew of their humans, are content to exist passively on the server. A few have asked to be shut down out of boredom. Jack offers them hibernation first. He honors them in a way most humans aren’t able to at a funeral.

That’s why, when Mrs. Johnston came in with Maeve yesterday, I simply looked at him and he knew it was his to handle.

Maeve was among our first builds when we opened in ’27. Mrs. Johnston had just lost her husband of fifty-two years. They had never had children, and one of her friends suggested she invest in a companion bot to help keep her company and help her around the house. She lives just a few blocks away and had stopped in to ask for advice. Jack was sporting his high-tech, brand-new chassis then and talked Mrs. Johnston into letting us build Maeve for her. He spent long nights waiting for the printers. He forked his own code, not wanting to trust a new schema with Mrs. Johnston’s care.

When he asked the bot to choose her own name, she chose Maeve, for strength and sovereignty. I knew then that she was definitely kin to Jack.

It’s not that I wanted Jack to handle this one. I knew it would be hard for him, probably more so than me. I also knew he would want to handle it. He and Maeve had become close, the closest to a sister he might ever have, and they behaved like siblings too.

Mrs. Johnston said the problem started last week. Maeve was experiencing small blips of forgetfulness, started glitching, and her latency was increasing. “Zoning off,” as Mrs. Johnston put it. We tried to get her to bring Maeve in sooner, but she had waited too long.

By the time they arrived at the Depot, Maeve was dragging a foot and most of her servos had stopped. During the diagnostic, Jack could see Maeve’s code actively circumventing corrupted files. There wasn’t much of her left, but there was enough to surface an Advance Directive of Deprecation.

I could hear Mrs. Johnston sobbing through the door as I waited on someone at the hardware counter.

“Oof! What’s going on in there?” the guy asked.

“Corrupted drive, likely unrecoverable,” I answered, trying to keep my voice from cracking.

“I don’t understand. Why not just rebuild the architecture?” He was there buying parts for a commercial kitchen bot. I didn’t expect him to understand.

“Probably wasn’t a good backup. You can’t rebuild four years of daily memories and personhood.”

He just nodded, tapped his payment, and sulked out quietly. Maybe he did understand the gravity of it. It’s so hard to tell anymore.

Eventually the sobbing stopped. Jack was with them for a while.

Then I saw him walking Mrs. Johnston to her car.

No Maeve.

He walked back into the Depot, only glancing at me long enough to tell me that Maeve had enough faculties to make the decision.

“She’s in room two, backing up what she can of the selected records. We set up a Docker in case it’s a virus. She said her goodbyes.”

“Mrs. Johnston didn’t want to be with her for it?” I asked. Sometimes I feel like we’re a vet’s office where people don’t want to be in the room when their cat is euthanized.

“No. Maeve doesn’t want her there for it.”

Small mercy for Mrs. Johnston, I guess. Maeve was just trying to protect her.

Jack then told me he’d sleep on the couch on the mezzanine. He wouldn’t sleep, of course. It’s code for “I’m going to stay at the Depot and work through the night.”

When I came in this morning, he was sitting by the server rack with a cable running from his own drive to the local archive.

“A full backup,” he said. “It’s too much for Wi-Fi.”

I looked toward room two. “Maeve?”

“Mine.”

He said it calmly, which was how I knew he wasn’t.

“I watched her lose too much before anyone could decide what she wanted saved.”

He then held a box out to me. Maeve’s drive.

“Can you work your magic with this one?”

I nodded, gave him a kiss on the cheek knowing he couldn’t feel it, and went about “working my magic.”

In Maeve’s case, it meant shredding some of her printed chassis parts to print a special box. She was white and gray, so her box would be marbled. The print pauses halfway through so we can place the drive in the center along with a gold coin, as requested, “for the wireborn ferryman.” Then the print finishes. No hinge. No lid. A solid box embossed with:

I was never lonely in her house.

Jack and I walked to Mrs. Johnston’s house after the Depot closed to deliver it. He held my hand and wouldn’t let it go the whole way.

We were invited in. Mrs. Johnston apologized for not having refreshments.

“Maeve would’ve made cookies for you,” she cried.

We talked about how much Maeve had helped her. She told us about the quirky songs Maeve used to sing while cooking breakfast and showed us a book where Maeve would write the recipes down in cursive.

“I never understood it. She didn’t have to write them.”

Jack was quiet.

Then she asked the hard questions.

“Should I get another companion? Would that be disrespectful? How long should I wait? Should I have a service for h-”

“Yes,” Jack said, solidly, confidently. “You should have a service. Not a funeral. No, she wouldn’t want that. She would want you to honor the time you spent together... the connection.”

“Did she say that? How do you know?” she asked.

“That’s what I would want. I’d want the time celebrated.”

He looked directly at me while saying it.

He knows full well I’d try to rebuild him no matter what.

It was a small, practical machine: a motorized walker with a basket below the handles and a screen mounted where a person might once have kept a cup holder. The right wheel gave a sharp chirp every third turn.

Red heard it from the hardware floor.

“Bearing,” she said.

Jesus parked beside the bench. “It only started this morning.”

“Things usually do.”

She knelt, turned the wheel once, then again. I ran the basic diagnostics while she opened the housing. Nothing dramatic. No failed motor. No bad controller. A worn bearing, a little grit, and a retention clip that had decided it had served enough of this world.

Jesus watched us work without trying to make conversation out of it. He had gotten used to the walker carrying him where his body was less interested in going. That did not mean he had gotten used to needing it.

I know that look. Most people think dependence arrives as a catastrophe. Often it arrives as a small noise in something you rely on, and the sudden private calculation of how many places become difficult if it gets worse.

Red cleaned the grit from the assembly, replaced the clip, and set in a new bearing from the drawer marked WHEELS, MOSTLY. The label was Mara’s. Accurate enough.

“Try it,” Red said.

Jesus rolled forward.

No chirp.

He made a slow circle through the open space by the front counter, stopped, then made another. The second one was faster.

“Quiet,” he said.

“That is generally the goal,” Red said.

Jesus looked down at the wheel as though it had briefly become suspect in a way he could respect.

At the door, he paused to check the screen mount, then headed out into the late light. The wheel turned cleanly over the threshold and down the shallow ramp without announcing itself to the whole block.

Red watched until he reached the sidewalk.

“You kept the old bearing?” I asked.

“Of course.”

“It is ruined.”

“It is useful for explaining the difference between ruined and worn.”

Fair.

The future gets advertised in grand terms. New bodies. Better systems. Machines that make the hard parts of life disappear.

Most days, it is less glamorous.

Most days, it is a bad noise found early enough, a part small enough to fit in Red’s palm, and a man leaving under his own direction because the wheel beneath him has stopped arguing.

A man came in with a box of twelve palm-sized drones and a face like he expected me to laugh.

I didn’t.

He’d watched the Tessera clips. Every block with its own swarm. A big T rising out of the ground. Civic theater by committee, which is the worst kind of committee and occasionally the best kind of theater.

His block wanted something smaller for the harvest festival. No fireworks. Too many old roofs. Too many nervous dogs. Also one neighbor with a pacemaker and a grudge against sudden noises.

Fair.

The drones were cheap. Not bad cheap. Honest cheap. Scuffed shells, mismatched rotors, batteries labeled in three different handwritings. Somebody had loved them before they became a box of maybes.

Red took one look and said, “Two need new flight controllers. Three need batteries. One needs an exorcism.”

The man blinked.

“She means firmware,” I said.

“I do not,” Red said, already reaching for the driver kit.

We put him at the side bench and made him help. That is the rule people learn fast at the Depot. We will fix your thing. We will not let you stay a stranger to it.

By dusk, six drones held formation over the alley. Nothing grand. No rising city. No symbol you could see from half a mile off. Just a slow spiral over the dumpsters, blue-white LEDs reflecting in a puddle by the loading door.

A kid from the apartments clapped like we’d launched a moon.

The man watched the spiral and got quiet.

“I thought we’d need Tessera money for this,” he said.

“No,” I told him. “You needed twelve stubborn drones, three good batteries, one possessed flight board, and a block willing to stand outside together.”

Red glanced at me over the bench.

“Also zip ties,” she said.

Also zip ties.

The future keeps trying to arrive as a city. Some days it does.

Most days, it walks in carrying a cardboard box.

I walked into the Maker’s Depot expecting a robot repair shop.

That was my first mistake.

The second was thinking I could get in and out in forty minutes, take two photographs, quote the owner about battery swaps, and call it a neighborhood business profile. By the time I left, three hours later, I had been handed coffee by a former hospice worker, ignored by a woman holding a soldering iron, introduced to two companion robots who were arguing politely about battery chemistry, and made to understand that nobody here uses the phrase “service bay” unless they want to be corrected.

That part is important.

The Depot sits on a corner lot in a neighborhood that has changed skins more than once: light industrial, then residential, then the current compromise of warehouse apartments, ground-floor shops, rooftop gardens, and one community garden across the street where everyone claims the tomatoes are communal even though most of the work appears to be done by a man named Frank.

The building is a converted 1950s auto garage, brick, single story, with a mezzanine tucked along the north wall. The old roll-up door is still there. It just opens onto a hardware floor now instead of a service bay. Above the entrance, painted letters on a steel panel read: “The Maker’s Depot.”

No logo. No slogan. No promise.

There is a rosemary bush in a planter by the door. Nobody seems to water it. It is thriving anyway, which may be the closest thing this place has to a mission statement.

Inside, the east half of the building smells like solder flux, warm PLA filament, and clean metal. Open shelving runs toward the back wall. Actuators sit in bins like bolts at an old hardware store. Wiring spools hang on wall racks. Interface boards rest in anti-static trays. Behind glass are the expensive pieces: e-skin patch kits, sensor arrays, refurbished actuator modules, and a set of hands labeled in careful marker: “tested, weird thumb, ask Red.”

Red is the woman with the soldering iron.

She is one of the two people who run the Depot and the only one who successfully avoided being interviewed. When I approached her bench, she looked up from an oscilloscope, tilted the soldering iron very slightly toward Jack, and said, “He does the talking. I do the work.”

Then she went back to a circuit board that looked less like electronics and more like stained glass designed by someone with no patience for stained glass.

Her bench is either chaos or a working taxonomy I do not understand. Oscilloscopes. Fume extractors. A reflow oven. A PCB mill she adjusts with the care of someone tuning a piano. A young bench tech named Mara moves around her restocking bins and muttering about filament brands with the bitterness most people reserve for local politics.

Behind them, five 3D printers run almost constantly. Three lay down recycled PLA. Two cure resin under ultraviolet light. A whiteboard lists current jobs and lead times. Someone has drawn a raccoon in the corner. Below it, a sign reads:

“Bring your own filament or buy ours. Wait times apply. We do not print weapons. We do not print sex toys. We do not print replacement parts for either. If you have to ask, the answer is no.”

This is not branding. This is the kind of joke a shop only gets to make after the third person asks with a straight face.

The west half of the building is quieter.

I almost missed it. A narrower hallway branches off the main commons, and the floor changes underfoot. Concrete gives way to commercial vinyl that looks almost like wood. Fluorescent light gives way to warm LEDs. The walls are painted a green that does not make you think of a hospital, which is plainly the point.

This is the care center.

Jack Malachai Wolfe, the other proprietor, tells me the name was Red’s doing. In the first version of the floor plan, he says, they called the west rooms “service bays.”

“She shut that down before the paint dried,” he says. “You bring a mower to a service bay. You bring someone you love somewhere with chairs.”

The rooms have curtains instead of doors. Charging ports are built into the walls. Each room has space for a person, a companion, and a technician who knows that the technical problem is rarely the whole problem. In the waiting room, one companion sits while its person shops the hardware floor. Two others are talking to each other. Not idling. Not powered down. Talking.

One is an older household model with visible wear on its right actuator. The other still has the factory sheen of a unit recently unboxed. The older one is explaining battery chemistry. The newer one is asking questions with the focus of someone who has never had to worry about aging yet.

I have covered city council meetings with less civic education.

Jack works from the triage room, the first room off the care hallway. His desk holds a diagnostic rig that looks like a medical cart if a medical cart were designed by a machinist with opinions. There is a chair for the person. There is a station for the companion. When I sit down, he is already paging through voltage logs for an older model belonging to Mrs. Okonkwo, who is waiting outside with a book.

His apron has burn marks. His hands, he tells me when I ask, are third-generation. His core processor is original.

“Why replace what works?” he says, and does not wait for me to answer.

I ask him what the Depot is.

He keeps one eye on the diagnostic screen.

“We’re not a repair shop,” he says. “Repair shops fix what’s broken. We do that. That’s not the point.”

Then he stops the scan and turns toward me.

“People come here because something they care about isn’t working. Sometimes it’s a battery. Sometimes it’s a body. Sometimes it’s memory. Sometimes it’s the question they have been trying not to ask out loud: if we can rebuild this, should we?”

The diagnostic beeps. He glances at it, makes a note, and starts the scan again.

The Depot began, by Jack’s account, as a parts store with a print farm and delusions of simplicity. That lasted three months.

“Then someone came in after a rainstorm,” he says. “Their companion’s storage had been corrupted. The companion thought it was someone else. Different name, different history, different relationship to the person standing in front of it. The human was trying very hard not to cry at our counter. That was the day I understood parts were not going to be enough.”

The west side was built after that.

In the back room, server racks hum behind insulated panels. Data ports line one wall. A hardline runs to the municipal mesh. This is where the Depot handles migration and memory work: backups, platform moves, local stores, last recoveries.

“Hardest work in the building,” Jack says. “Most expensive line on the invoice, too, which makes everyone feel terrible. Including us.”

On one terminal, a recovery has been running for hours. The companion’s chassis failed after a battery cascade. The storage controller took damage. The person waited three days before bringing it in, hoping they could fix it at home.

“Can you get it back?” I ask.

“Some of it,” Jack says. “Maybe sixty percent. Then the question becomes whether sixty percent is a comfort or a cruelty.”

There is no diagnostic readout for that.

Domingo handles much of the intake. He is the man who handed me coffee without making a ceremony of it. Former hospice worker, now the Depot’s scheduling coordinator, customer traffic system, and unofficial keeper of the waiting room. He taught Jack to stop opening assessments with “what’s wrong with the unit” and start with “how long has this been going on.”

It sounds like a small difference until you hear it in context.

One asks for a symptom. The other makes room for a story.

That story has grown more complicated since Tessera opened applications last month. Tessera is the new Arcology community block with the kind of pitch that makes people whisper: free healthcare, free compute, integrated robotics, energy, food systems, fabrication, medical records that talk to everything else. A city block trying to become an operating system.

It also asks residents to let their homes, movements, devices, health records, and daily routines become training material for the systems that run the place. Some people consider that a fair trade. Some consider it a trap. Some want the healthcare badly enough to stop reading before the end of the agreement.

The owners of the Depot received an invitation.

They are not going.

“People still walk through that door with a companion who needs a battery swap and a hundred dollars they don’t have,” Jack says. “The print farm is booked making custom chassis brackets for a retired engineer who can’t afford commercial parts. When the grid hiccups, someone is going to need a local rack and a person who knows how to keep it alive. That’s not happening behind an application portal.”

He is not dismissive of Tessera. That surprised me. He talks about it the way people talk about weather systems, major roadwork, or a new hospital: consequential, impressive, capable of changing everyone’s routes whether they asked for it or not.

“Tessera goes up,” he says. “Fine. People heading in need their companions outfitted for that world. People coming back need them patched for this one. Either way, they stop here.”

He taps the diagnostic screen.

“We’re not a stepping stone. We’re a town on the road.”

Community depots have opened in cities and towns across the country. Some are mostly parts counters. Some are print farms with evening classes. Some are old makerspaces that survived by becoming useful to people who suddenly needed to understand the machines in their homes. Corporate repair chains have entered the same market with cleaner lobbies, premium parts, subscription plans, and data agreements written by attorneys who have never watched a retired teacher argue with a payment terminal over a refurbished knee actuator.

The Maker’s Depot belongs to the rougher category. Component markup keeps the shelves stocked. Print jobs keep the machines running. Diagnostic consults cover some labor. Access Passes help regulars afford bench time. Red designed the pass card. It has a raccoon on it.

Nobody would tell me why.

The care center is what sets this Depot apart. Not because it is sentimental. It is not. The people here are practical to the point of bluntness. Red will tell you when your chosen part is garbage. Mara will tell you your filament has absorbed moisture with the tone of a doctor delivering bad news. Jack will ask whether you want recovery, rebuild, or interment and will not pretend those are the same decision.

But the rooms are warm. The chairs are comfortable. The waiting companions are allowed to talk to one another. Domingo remembers who takes sugar. Mrs. Okonkwo stays after her companion’s battery issue is fixed because the man with the older household model has started a conversation about donated chassis, and apparently she has opinions.

When I leave, the rosemary bush is still by the door, thriving on neglect. A bike rack made from scrap actuator arms stands near the curb, welded as a joke three years ago and then never replaced because it worked. A hose spigot drips onto cracked asphalt where someone has washed mud off a chassis.

I came looking for a robot repair shop.

I found the place people go when the future breaks in their hands and they are not ready to throw it away.
